Setting up a new ice bath: the first fill
The Clear As Ice start-up sequence in order: chlorine out, alkalinity, pH, hardness, sanitiser, minerals. With amounts per 1000 litres.
Updated 27 October 2026. Based on the Clear As Ice General Maintenance & Step by Step Guide.

- 1
Know your litres
Every dose depends on it. Check your bath's user guide or ask the manufacturer.
- 2
Fill and start filtration
Filtration runs every time you add a product.
- 3
Chlorine Remover
12.5 ml per 1000 L. Run filtration 30 minutes, then test with strips.
- 4
Total alkalinity first
18 g Alkalinity Increaser per 1000 L raises TA by 10 ppm. No more than 40 g per 1000 L at a time, 30 minutes between additions.
- 5
Then pH
Too high: 43 g pH Reducer per 1000 L lowers pH by 1 unit. Too low: 18 g Alkalinity Increaser per 1000 L raises it by 1 unit.
- 6
Then calcium hardness
10 g Hardness Increaser per 1000 L raises hardness by 10 ppm. Run filtration 30 minutes.
- 7
Sanitiser
60 ml per 1000 L. Run filtration 30 minutes. Do not overdose.
- 8
Minerals, if you use them
50 ml per 1000 L. Run filtration 30 minutes.
Worked example
A 1000 L bath reading zero total alkalinity needs 180 g of Alkalinity Increaser to reach 100 ppm. Add it as 40 g, 40 g, 40 g, 40 g and 20 g, 30 minutes apart with filtration running.
Why the order matters
Alkalinity Increaser raises both alkalinity and pH, so correcting pH before alkalinity means doing it twice.
